Datamining vs. Data Mining

by Jake on October 12, 2009

Explanation of why some people call it "datamining" while others prefer "data mining".

Arguing over how to spell data mining datamining is nitpicking at its finest. But I seem to end up discussing it time and time again, so in this article I will once and for all why I spell it the way I do (without the space)

Data Mining

If you look up "data mining" in the dictionary, you will find something like this:

Data mining
"The technique of identifying patterns and relationships within large databases through the use of advanced statistical methods."
Dictionary.com

This is much closer to what you do when using Pokertracker or Holdem Manager to browse a database containing the hand histories you have gathered. Calling the process of collecting the hand histories for data mining isn't really fitting - regardless of how you spell it.

Datamining

I personally prefer using the term "datamining". I treat it as a different word and different meaning than "data mining".

So what is datamining you ask?

Well, it is the process of collecting hand histories from poker games that you aren't participating in yourself :-)

The word may originally have come from a misspelling/misunderstanding of "data mining", but so has many of the other words that we use today.

The whole discussion can be summed up like this: When you are datamining, you are not "mining" the data(set)to extract pattern, you are mining online poker tables to extract data, which you can later use for data mining.
